Our landlord came over last week to fix a few things…leaking shower head, needed hotter bath water etc. He was very nice, and fixes a bunch of little things, and got his roofer over to see about a garage roof problem, some of the tiles slope the wrong way and send water in a small waterfall down one outside corner of the house. We had not even noticed the problem.
Anyway, while he was here he told me about a local retirement group called U3A. University for the third age…retirement. They off a monthly program and then lots of groups you can join. The program yesterday was a slide show about British “b” films of the 50’s and 60’s. He also talked about the film noir genre, gritty, no budget to speak of, often an establishing shot of a famous place like Scotland Yard, then everything else on a back studio type set. It was well attended and interesting. He also had slides of favorite actors/actresses, and favorite old time movie confections….none of which were familiar to me. It was an interactive slide show, so people would call out names of actors as they came on the screen. It was nice to hear people chuckle at old familiar film faces. I paid for the year, 15 pounds, plus 1 more pound for tea and cookies. Very nice.
I introduced myself to a lady and asked her what groups she belonged to. She said gardening 4. Oh, I said, did you have to graduate from the other classes first. No, she said, she merely lived outside the town of Oundle…I guess the other 3 groups are within Oundle? She said her group has about 10 people, and they went twice a month, and in the summer they go to visit manor homes and gardens. I could get used to that. I think I’m younger than most, if not all, but you must be at least partly retired to join. I fit! They also offer line dancing twice a month, so I’ll join that group too. I’ll let you know how that goes.
This weekend we go to Oxford for our MLK weekend. We expect a lot of walking, a Morse/Lewis/Endeavor tour and some nice pub food. My email will be late next week as well.
We have finished filling out our NHS paperwork, and we will drop it off at the Surgery(Doctors office) this afternoon. Then I think we wait a month to get our numbers…then we can visit the local GP. We still have a bit of Cigna insurance…but have no answers as to how that whole thing will work. Time will tell. Our health is currently awesome, but that’s the time to become connected to services that take awhile to set up. Still doing well on my Perscription supplies.
On Sunday we tool a long walk, over 3.5 miles around the flooded canal paths and a lock. I ended up with blisters from my wellies, I think I need to add more socks. Then today a friend came over and I helped her cut out a jacket pattern. She will use my machine to sew it, but a fun project. I will probably use her pattern later and make myself a jacket too. Just for fun.
I have many green plants sticking their heads out of the ground….I’m interested to know what kind of spring plants they are. Guessing snow drops, daffodils, crocuses and similar things. How I enjoy a gardeners' garden! Of course I’ll need to add my own touches, once I can see where there is room to add plants.
But for now, stay cozy! Spring is still a long way off, unless you live in Atlanta or California!
