In the last week we have had a lot of rain, normal- really year round. The temps typically hover in the low 40’s all day. A wool coat or sweater and rain coat is always needed when outside. There is not nearly the amount of temp fluctuations here as in the states. I find that so surprising.
I walk into town several days a week to run errands, see the eye doctor, drop off paperwork with the rental company. It gets me out of the house, which I like. Because we get get frequent rain, the air almost always smells very clean and scrubbed fresh. It just delightful to fill your lungs with it!
I’ve been trying to use my clothes dryer(which lives in the garage) less, and use the clothes line, like a proper English person, but I can’t tell the difference between very cold clothes and dry clothes. So this week, I gave myself a break from it…though I did buy more clothes pins, which should make my experience more successful, once the weather warms a bit, when would that be, Jenevieve? April??
John stayed home last Friday because the TV guy was coming to give us a small dish, and our landlords had a variety of stipulations. Then we walked to the other end of town to pick up a Ford Fiesta that John bought. This small car is perfect for the tiny parking places and small roads. I will be driving the Honda Jazz from the Beavers after it gets a necessary test done, and perhaps some repair work. Yes I’m licensed to drive, no I have not got around to it. End of January, I guess. So far I don’t really have places to go that I can’t walk, but I would like to explore farther afield pretty soon.
The house is all unpacked except for the sewing room which is also a catch all room. I mended a sweater the other day, took 5 minutes, but was satisfying. More later after I get everything put away.
We went to the church Christmas service this weekend, which was wonderful. Carols, some interesting dancers, some video and a short message. The choir and musicians did a great job. We went to the evening service, and the trees outside were covered with lights. They had cookie stations in the lobby, so we each chose scotch shortbread to enjoy. Afraid neither of us like mince pies very much. I understand some brands are better than others. Will I try some. Maybe. Keeping my sugar in check, I think its best to pass.
We are “Amazoning” things we need now, exertion blender, clothes pins, beard trimmer, butter dish the right size for the butter here- wider and taller than at home. Mine is clear, and has the shape of a cow on it. Moo.
We are only doing stockings this year- as we have bought a car….and just moved. Besides the pesky move related items we don’t need much, and wonder where to store it if we get it. We are trying to live a more simple life. I hope we succeed. Minimalism is here to stay, and there is something to be said for having less stuff. Meanwhile…I feel like to “need” most of what I have, but always have a charity shop pile in process…so I guess I’m letting go of some things.
We were invited to a friend of Jenevieve for an open house yesterday. I made small scones and took 2 kinds of jam and whipped cream. The time was very nice, and 1 family brought their 2 kids, 5 and 3, so the hostess had made a gingerbread house for the kids to decorate, plus gingerbread men too. It was a relaxing visit and we enjoyed getting to know several families. We talked to some of the couples about places in the UK they had visited, and long rambling walks they enjoyed. We look forward to doing this ourselves once spring arrives.
I made my first video for the grandkids today, reading a favorite kids book, The Mitten by Jan Brett. I hope it can give the Moms 6 minutes of peace as the kids watch me read it. My set up was less than ideal, but I had to start somewhere. Feedback is welcome from those children who see it on our shared photo drive. Meanwhile, I keep the instagram/Facebook pictures coming as I see interesting sights. I’ll send more pictures soon to Mom and Janet by email.
The Britts had a big election last week, and I had heard a lot of talk as I walked around. I think this rural area where we live was pretty happy about the outcome. We pay attention, but can’t vote. It was interesting to hear some of the post election commentary….very similar to the USA news as they hash it out, area by area, wins and losses. Interesting, as I said, to follow along and learn. We are along for the ride!
We hear the Beavers have found a wonderful rental in Corona, CA, and will get the keys this coming Friday…so before Christmas! Wonderful news as the rental market is very fast and competitive. They hope their shipment arrives before Christmas. Wouldn’t that be terrific! I expect we can pass around their new address pretty soon.
From my home to yours, with the amazing speed of the internet! Love to all —
