We got home yesterday from the Norfolk coast. We weathered the gale that was storm Dennis. It was a nice trip! We stayed at a little B&B just off the High Street(main drag). 2 short blocks from the promenade which was a a wide paved walk, like a boardwalk. We did walk north to old Hunstanton, where the light house is. Unfortunately, they whacked the lens off of it when it was automated…and it looks like the top is just…missing. Anyway, still nice to see and walk around!
They also had plaques to remember St. Edmunds who was, for a time, patron saint to the UK, and king of Norfolk and Suffolk. He was killed by vikings because he was a king. Its a sad story as vikings were the pagan, pillaging sort.
We really enjoyed the cliffs, which were near the light house. You could take a chalk piece to rock, and draw on any of the other kinds of rocks, just like you were using store chalk. Crazy. The other layers were something with iron ore in it, and evidently its easy to find fossils—if one knows what to look for.
We actually did the northern walk on Friday and Saturday, the Saturday with the gale winds and stinging rain. But Great exercise! We also walked south Saturday morning, on the beach, and picked up a lot of interesting rocks, shells and a little sea glass. We enjoyed greeting a lot of people and dogs, and chatted with several people too. Charming! We also went into a small hole in the wall fabric store, which had lots of nice fabrics. I didn’t purchase anything, but it was nice to be amongst the fabrics.
The town had 2 bakeries, so on Saturday lunch we got sausage rolls and apple turnovers for lunch back at the room. That was nice and restful, and it let our feet warm up and jackets dry out bit.
On Sunday after the full English breakfast( except black pudding and fried bread) we drove to Castle Rising for a visit to this old ruin from 1140 (I think). Queen Isabella lived there, she was the Mother of Edward the III. Anyway, the mote is incredibly deep, and this fort was never really used for defense or war. We got ourselves an English Heritage year pass, which I think we will really enjoy. It was on our Christmas list- but everyone says not to buy it till you plan to use it…and we got a 20% off flier in the mail, which I brought along. Yay!
Today I went by bus with our next door neighbor Maurita to the Peterborough indoor mall. We shopped at John Lewis and looked into several other stores. Its easier to take the bus than to drive there- unless John is driving, and the bus let us off 1 block from home. Perfect. What a charming and kind neighbor! We went into the Peterborough Cathedral, and it was beautiful. Such tall walls, fancy ceilings etc. I didn’t take any pictures. My neighbor wanted to light some candles, so I sat in the back row and enjoyed the peace- and the views.
We celebrate John’s birthday in a week and a half. That will be fun. We are also planning our March trip, a weekend away in Edinburgh, with Fairfax friends who are traveling for his work.
More flowers come up in my garden, and my little rhubarb plant is growing about an inch a day. What happiness! Hope ups all are staying well. The advice I’ve heard is to add extra vitamin C and selenium ( or a Brazil nut a day) to try an prevent the Corona virus….
